No Sound After Upgrading to Karmic?

November 3, 2009 Leave a comment

Same here. Luckily I found a quick fix I thought I’d share with you guys.

Run the following in Terminal:

sudo apt-get install gnome-alsamixer

After install, open up the app from Applications>Sound and Video, and just unmute everything (as well as sliding up the volume) on both tabs.

And your sound should work as normal!

Install Ubuntu Updates Wihout Rebooting

October 31, 2009 Leave a comment

You know those kernel updates and such like that force you to restart your always-on system, interrupting your geek-a-thon? Yeah, I hate them too.

restart

Well here comes KSplice, that fixes that problem. It allows you to install any update without restarting your system.

Download a .deb for Karmic or Jaunty here.

It will auto-start and sit in the panel and notify you when any kernel updates are available.

It does not automatically create a menu entry, so if you wish to restart it (or start it again after quitting), run the following command in the terminal:

uptrack-manager

Of course you can create an entry in the GNOME menu by going to System>Preferences>Main Menu>Add Entry and in the command field entering the one above.

Please note that you can only install kernel updates in KSplice, and must install any others in the regular Update Manager.
